Cornell wins Binghamton Volleyball Invitational, Bearcats finish second

VESTAL, N.Y.-- Led by the play of tournament MVP Elizabeth Bishop, Cornell (6-3) swept both of its games on Saturday to win the Binghamton Volleyball Invitational with a 3-0 record for the two-day event. The host Bearcats (7-8) also went 2-0 on Saturday but because of Friday's loss to the Big Red, they had to settle for second place.
Bishop had 13 kills in the opening match on Saturday against Fairleigh Dickinson. The scores were 30-22, 30-24, 30-13. In addition, she made just one error in 20 attempts to hit .550 for the match. Hayley Grieve chipped in 10 kills and Kelly Kramer added 10 digs.
In the second match of the day, Binghamton was led by senior outside hitter Michele Heck (Chicago, Ill.) in its four-game win over St. Francis (0-13). She registered a match-high 18 kills and had nine digs. Sophomore setter Ashley Meffert (Louisville, Ky.) added 50 assists.
Cornell wrapped up the tournament title with a 30-19, 30-22, 30-22 win over St. Francis in the third match of the day. Bishop did not play but Rachel Adomat led the way with 15 kills. Kramer added a team-high 12 digs.
Senior middle blocker Anne Crocus (Bethlehem, Pa.) was the star of Binghamton's 25-30, 30-15, 30-22, 30-21 win over Fairleigh Dickinson in the final match. She had a match-high 19 kills and made just one error in 32 attempts to hit .531. Heck added 11 kills and freshman Megan Phillips (Windsor, N.Y.) had a match-high 15 digs.
In addition to Bishop, Crocus and Heck were named to the All-Tournament team along with Sharon Becker of Fairleigh Dickinson, Katie Rademacher of Cornell and Malgorzata Szyszka of St. Francis.
