VESTAL, N.Y.--The Bearcats (4-3) lost a pair of matches on the second day of competition at the Binghamton Invitational. Binghamton took on Youngstown State and Canisius, falling to each in four games.
In the match against Youngstown State (7-4), the Bearcats took the first game 34-32 before falling 30-15, 30-18, 30-26. Binghamton fought off game point in the first game and finally secured the game on its fifth game point. However, the Penguins then attacked at a .369 clip over the final three games to take the match.
Senior outside hitter Colleen Royer (Euclid, Ohio/Villa Angela/St. Joseph's) led the Penguins to the win with 26 kills and 11 digs. Classmate Annie Buschur (New Weston, Ohio/St. Henry's) added 14 kills and senior setter Beth Boscarelli (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Joseph's) tallied 49 assists.
Senior outside hitter Allison Beard (Elkland, Pa.) had a team-high 13 kills for BU, while junior right-side hitter Jen Smith (North Tonawanda, Pa.) added 12 kills with a .550 attack percentage. Freshman setter Ashley Meffert (Louisville, Ky./Fern Creek) dished out 46 assists.
Against Canisius (4-7), the Bearcats lost 28-30, 30-28, 30-27, 30-25. Binghamton had four hitters with double-digit kills, led by junior outside hitter Michele Heck (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection), who had 17 kills. Junior middle blocker Anne Crocus (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) followed with 13 kills and four blocks, while Beard had 12 kills. Junior outside hitter Morgan Jimerson (Grandview, N.Y./Nyack) added 10 kills and Meffert passed off a season-best 55 assists.
Junior outside hitter Christina Wildes (Long Beach, N.Y.) had a match-high 21 kills for the Golden Griffins, and senior setter Jackie Reed (East Quague, N.Y./James Madison University) had 62 assists. Canisius attacked at a .335 clip during the match, led by freshman middle hitter Mary Boller (Clarence, N.Y.) who sported a .414 attack percentage on the strength of a 16-4-29 performance.
Earlier in the day, the Golden Griffins defeated Quinnipiac (2-7) 3-0, winning by scores of 30-13, 31-29, 30-22. Sophomore middle hitter Leigh Launhardt (Rochester, N.Y./Greece-Arcadia) led Canisius with 10 kills and Jackie Reed had 31 assists. Senior outside hitter Jackie Gallo (North Branford, Conn./North Branford) led Quinnipiac with 15 kills.
Youngstown State also defeated Quinnipiac in three games, 30-15, 31-29 and 30-22. The Penguins won in exciting fashion, as they fought off four game points and scored the final six points in the second game. Colleen Royer continued her outstanding day with 17 kills and five service aces. Sophomore setter Angie Pasquinelli (Toledo, Ohio/Toledo Central Catholic) tallied 35 assists. Jackie Gallo had eight kills for Quinnipiac.
Binghamton will have a week off before returning to action next Saturday at the Central Connecticut State Invitational. The Bearcats will face Iona at 1:30 p.m. and take on the host Blue Devils at 4 p.m.
