Binghamton volleyball splits final two matches at Cleveland State Invitational
Bearcats go 1-2 at tourney; Brody named to all-tournament team

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Binghamton (6-7) split its final two matches at the Cleveland State Invitational on Saturday, falling to San Diego State, 3-0, before edging Niagara, 3-2.

Against tournament champion San Diego State, BU ran into an excellent hitting Aztecs team that hit .362 for the match. The Bearcats, in contrast, hit .160. San Diego won 30-19, 30-12, 30-24. Junior outside hitter Katie Brody (Vestal, N.Y.) had a team-high eight kills and junior setter Ashley Meffert (Louisville, Ky.) contributed 24 assists.

Against Niagara, BU held on for a 30-20, 30-23, 26-30, 25-30, 15-11 win. Brody led all players with 21 kills. She also had 23 digs. Junior outside hitter Katie Robertson (Ancaster, Ontario) collected 15 kills and sophomore middle blocker Jacki Kane (Centennial, Colo.) added 13 kills and 12 blocks (3 solo). Meffert totalled 53 assists and 19 digs.

"It was a back-and-forth match," head coach Glenn Kiriyama said of the Niagara win. "We did an aggressive job of hitting and we also played a good scrappy defense with a lot of digs. It was a nice win for us."

Binghamton hit .316 in the pivotal fifth game.

Brody was the lone BU player named to the all-tournament team. The Bearcats went 1-2 in the two-day event.

Binghamton returns to action at the Yale Tournament on September 23-24.
