Binghamton volleyball drops home opener to Colgate 3-1

VESTAL, N.Y. - Katrina Zawojski posted a match-high 17 kills to lead Colgate (4-8) over Binghamton (3-8) 3-1 (25-21, 20-25, 16-25, 25-21), spoiling the Bearcats' home opener from the West Gym on Tuesday night.

The Bearcats were at their best during a 14-2 run during the third set in which senior libero Jaclyn Strader dropped in three services aces to spark the hosts.

Binghamton fought hard until the end, coming up with six team stuffs in the fourth set, including four blocks alone from sophomore Mercedes Montford.

"It was a hard fought match," head coach Glenn Kiriyama said. "I thought we came back well in the third [set] and kept it tight in the fourth [set]. We are still working on some things and are hoping to pick it up even more this weekend."

Sophomores Michelle McDonough and Anna Lejina each tallied 14 kills for the Bearcats and senior captain Ashley Allen contributed 12 kills of her own. McDonough also came up with five blocks in the match.

Binghamton will be traveling to Ohio this weekend to take part in the Bowling Green/Best Western Invitational. The squad will play its first match against host Bowling Green at 7 p.m. on Friday night.
