NEW YORK -- The Binghamton volleyball team completed their preseason tournament schedule in New York City this weekend at the Columbia Invitational. The Bearcats (7-9) defeated St. Francis (N.Y.) 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-16) and fell in straight sets to Iowa (20-25, 15-25, 16-25), Saturday afternoon at Levien Gymnasium. Binghamton has one more non-conference match versus Cornell before their America East opener against defending champion Albany next Sunday.
In Binghamton's only victory of the weekend, the Bearcats raced out to a 15-4 lead forcing the St. Francis coach to use both of his time outs. Eight kills from junior outside hitter Iva Partaleva sparked the BU scoring outburst. Binghamton used a hitting percentage of .400, knocking down 15 kills, while holding St. Francis to a .129 hit rate to run away with the first set 25-16.
Binghamton continued their impressive hitting performance in the second frame putting down 18 kills. Four different Bearcats tallied three kills apiece during the set, compiling another stellar hit rate of .350. Freshman setter Amanda Dettmann handed out 12 assists for the second straight set, putting her teammates in perfect position to finish off points. St. Francis did make the frame interesting closing within four, but a kill by Partaleva put the set away 25-20.
BU took command of the third frame on a Partaleva kill making the score 10-4. The Bearcats continued to roll as a termination by junior middle Alex Roland increased BU's lead to 15-9. The Bearcats held the Terriers to a negative hitting percentage to complete the sweep 25-16.
Partaleva led the Bearcats with 17 kills and seven digs. Dettmann handed out 36 assists while chipping 11 digs. Sophomore Grace Vickers put down ten terminations for BU and classmate Xiomara Ortiz picked up 11 digs.
BU out hit St. Francis .327 to .107, tallying 46 kills to just 28 by the Terriers.
Against Iowa the Bearcats were unable to earn their first win of the tournament falling in straight sets. In the first set Partaleva did all she could to keep BU in the frame with seven kills. Binghamton out hit Iowa .257 to .216 and committed less attack errors, but still dropped the set 25-20.
The Bearcats didn't fair as well in the second set as Iowa jumped out to an 8-2 advantage. Binghamton tried to climb back into the game winning two long rallies, but just couldn't find the points to make the set interesting. BU fought off three Iowa set points before an attack error gave the Hawkeyes the frame 25-15.
In the third set BU jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but five straight points by Iowa eliminated the Bearcats' cushion. From there Iowa ran away with the set holding BU to a .130 hitting percentage and just six kills. Four service errors by Binghamton hindered the comeback as Iowa closed out BU 25-16.
Partaleva led the Bearcats with nine kills while freshman Kristin Hovie added five of her own. Freshman Amanda Dettmann had a solid outing with 18 assists and seven digs.
Iva Partaleva was named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Bearcats will face Cornell in their final non-conference match before America East play opens up, Friday, Sept. 23 at 7 p.m.
