Volleyball drops 2007 home opener to Syracuse in three games
Bearcats school record home win streak halted at 14 games
Vestal, N.Y. --Senior hitter Cheryl Cobbina posted a double-double with a match-high 18 kills and 11 digs to lead visiting Syracuse (8-5) to a 3-0 sweep of the Binghamton University volleyball team in its 2007 home opener Friday at the West Gym. The Orange came out on top by scores of 30-18, 30-25, 30-22. The loss ends the Bearcats school record home winning streak at 14 games.
The Orange used a 17-3 run to erase an early 5-1 deficit in the match opener and cruised to a 30-18 win. Things tightened up in a second set that featured seven ties and five lead changes. However, with the score even at 21-21, Syracuse scored six of the game's next eight points en route to a 30-25 win and a 2-0 match lead. In game three, the Bearcats never found their rhythm as the Orange led from start to finish and put the finishing touches on a 3-0 sweep with a 30-22 win.
Syracuse outhit BU by .227 to .076 and held the advantage in blocks with nine to the Bearcats' two.
Senior captain Kathleen Schauer (Littleton, Colo.) led the Bearcats with 10 kills and a .212 attack percentage. Junior libero Jaclyn Strader (Kettering, Ohio) chipped in with a team-high 19 digs.
Binghamton (6-5) will continue its in-season tournament play this weekend at the Villanova Classic. The Bearcats take on William and Mary and host Villanova on Friday, before matches with Princeton and Liberty on Saturday.
Game Notes: Syracuse owns a 15-2 advantage in the all-time series. Binghamton's last win over the Orange came back in 1976.
