WASHINGTON D.C.--Senior middle blocker Anne Crocus (Bethlehem, Pa.) had a team-high 4.23 kills and 1.61 blocks per game, leading Binghamton (5-5) to a 2-1 record at the George Washington Volleyball Invitational this past weekend. The Bearcats defeated Akron in five games on Friday, lost to the host Colonials in four games on Saturday morning and closed out the weekend with a four-game win over Jacksonville on Saturday afternoon.
Other solid performers for the Bearcats this weekend included sophomore setter Ashley Meffert (Louisville, Ky.) , who averaged 11.38 assists and 3.46 digs per game, senior outside hitter Jen Smith (North Tonawanda, N.Y.), who averaged 3.30 kills and 3.61 digs per game, and senior outside hitter Michele Heck (Chicago, Ill.), who also averaged 3.30 kills per game.
"This was a good weekend for our team," head coach Glenn Kiriyama said. "We had some tight matches that could have gone either way but we fought back and pulled through most of the time."
Crocus, who was named to the all-tournament team, nailed a career-high 26 kills in the match against Akron, which Binghamton won 22-30, 30-17, 20-30, 30-26, 16-14. Her previous career high was 25 kills, set earlier this season against Texas-Arlington (on Sept. 5). The match against Akron also marked the third time this season that Crocus has posted at least 20 kills in a match.
"Anne was tough to stop this weekend," Kiriyama said. "At times our opponents had a hard time just getting hands on her hits."
Meffert tallied 56 assists against Akron and Smith posted a double-double with 12 kills and 17 digs. Heck added 12 kills.
In the match against George Washington, Crocus again was front and center, posting a team-high 19 kills and seven total blocks. Nevertheless, the Bearcats were defeated 33-31, 31-29, 28-30, 30-28. Smith posted another double-double with 14 kills and 19 digs while Heck added 17 kills. Meffert had 51 assists and 14 digs while sophomore middle blocker Megan Hoag (Brunswick, Ohio) added 16 digs and sophomore outside hitter Katelyn Robinson (Ancaster, Ontario) had nine kills and 11 digs.
Binghamton rebounded against Jacksonville, winning 25-30, 30-20, 30-21, 30-24. Smith led the way with a match-high 17 kills while Heck posted 15 kills and Crocus added 10 kills. Meffert had 41 assists and a career-high 19 digs while Hoag and freshman outside hitter Kristin Stephens (Melville, N.Y.) each recorded three aces.
The Bearcats travel to Hofstra for a single match on Sunday at 3 p.m.
