VESTAL, N.Y. -- In her last home match at Binghamton Michelle McDonough broke BU's all-time kills record en route to a 3-1 (25-11, 25-17, 16-25, 25-22) victory over visiting Hartford. The Bearcats improved its record to 14-13 overall and 9-3 in the conference. BU will be the two seed in this weekend's America East tournament. The Bearcats will face off against UMBC on Friday.
"The win today was very important because you always want to be playing well heading into the conference tournament," head coach Glenn Kiriyama said. "Our seniors came up big for us today down the stretch with some key blocks. We have a seasoned team and should be well prepared for tournament."
BU put together a dominate first set both offensively and defensively. The Bearcats held Hartford to a hitting percentage of -.222 while hitting .333 themselves. McDonough put down four terminations in the set giving her the all-time kills record. Binghamton registered six block assists in the frame, taking the one-set-to-none advantage.
In the second set the Bearcats continued to hit extremely well firing off a .387 rate. BU built an early eight point lead, 14-6 and Hartford was never able to recover dropping the second set, 25-17.
Hartford took the third set, 25-16, holding Binghamton to a game-low .048 hitting percentage. BU would recover however and take the four and final set 25-22. McDonough would come up big once again closing out the match with a solo block.
Prior to the game Binghamton University and the volleyball program honored its six seniors. Sandra DeVito, Mercedes Montford, Kseniia Sukach, Lindsey Mueller, McDonough and Lejina all played their final home match Sunday afternoon.
