Binghamton volleyball falls to Maine in final regular season game

ORONO, Maine--In the final match of the regular season, the Binghamton (17-16, 7-7 AE) volleyball team fell 3-2 to Maine (18-10, 8-4 AE) in an America East volleyball match Saturday at Memorial Gymnasium. Binghamton lost the match 24-30, 16-30, 30-24, 32-30, 15-10.

"It was a tough match tonight. We played a little better than we did last night," head coach Glenn Kiriyama said. "They just played a little better than us. They took advantage of our errors. Hopefully we will be ready for next weekend in Albany, Maine just beat them and we played close with Maine, so we will see."

After losing the first two games the Bearcats came back and won the next two games. The fifth game started out close, but by the the changeover Maine was up 8-5, and the Black Bears heldstrong the rest of the match.

Senior right side hitter Jen Smith (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) had 15 kills and and a team-high 16 digs with four blocks. Senior outside hitter Michele Heck (Chiago, Ill.) recorded a team-high 16 kills and added six digs. Sophomore setter Ashley Meffert (Louisville, Ky.) added 44 assists and 13 digs. Sophomore middle blocker Megan Hoag (Brunswick, Ohio) had 10 kills and 15 digs. Freshman defensive specialist Megan Phillips (Windsor, N.Y.) added 12 digs and classmate middle blocker Jacki Kane (Centennial, Colo.) contributed seven kills and a team high six blocks.

Binghamton, the No. 4 seed, next heads to Albany on Friday for a semifinal match at 5 p.m. against the top seeded host Great Danes.
