Bearcats even conference record with win over Maine

Box Score

ORONO, Maine--Junior middle blocker Anne Crocus (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) tallied 17 kills with a .615 attack percentage and Binghamton (13-9, 3-3 AE) defeated Maine (10-16, 1-5 AE) 3-1 on Friday evening at Memorial Gymnasium. The Bearcats won the match by scores of 30-26, 28-30, 30-27, 30-22. With the win, Binghamton evens its America East record at 3-3 and surpasses last season's conference win total.

"I thought our middles had a great match in terms of hitting and blocking," head coach Glenn Kiriyama said. "When our passing was there, we were able to run a really nice offense. I also thought our serving kept them off balance most of the night."

After the teams split the first two games, the match turned on the serving of both sides in the final two games. A series of aces by the Bearcats, countered by a flurry of Maine service errors, swung the match into Binghamton's favor. The Bearcats wound up with 15 aces in the match and took advantage of 14 errors by the Black Bears.

Junior outside hitter Michele Heck (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) led the squad by matching a season- and career-high with five service aces. She also had 10 digs and provided eight kills. In the procss, Heck moved into fourth place on the school's all-time list with 894 career kills, surpassing Leigh Houghton (1995-98), who had 889 career kills. Senior outside hitter Allison Beard (Elkland, Pa.) had four aces and contributed 10 kills, while senior defensive specialist Nicole Savin (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) produced 17 digs.

"Anne [Crocus] had a real nice game with a great attack percentage tonight," Kiriyama said. "I also thought Nicole [Savin] had a great match. She had a lot of nice digs in the back row."

The Bearcats will travel to New Hampshire for a match on Saturday at 7 p.m. before returning home for their next six matches.
