Toledo, Ohio - All-American setter, Lexi Zimmerman tallied 30 assists leading Michigan (1-0) to a 3-0 (22-25, 16-25, 21-25) sweep of Binghamton (0-1) at the Rocket Volleyball Classic Friday evening.
"Overall, we played them tough and hung in there for a bit," head coach Glenn Kiriyama said. "Our blocking was pretty effective, but we need to clean up our setting, passing and serving, so we definitely have some things to work on."
Binghamton tied the match at two early in the first set but then a 7-0 run by the Wolverines gave Michigan the advantage. Binghamton played Michigan tight until the Wolverines opened up a 20-15 lead, which they never looked back upon.
The third set saw the Bearcats take its biggest lead of the match at 13-10, but another 7-0 run by the Wolverines broke open the set. BU never regained the lead as they dropped their first match of the season.
Binghamton outblocked Michigan in the match, 11-5.
In her debut at the setter position, junior Julie Chambers dished out 22 assists to go with 9 digs.
Binghamton returns to action tomorrow with two games, the first against tournament-host Toledo at 10 a.m. and their finale at 5 p.m. versus Loyola (Md).
Note: McDonough broke a tie with Anne Crocus to gain sole possession of second place on the Division I career kills list. McDonough now has 1,089 kills.
