Arizona native Montford signs with Binghamton volleyball
Bearcats add fourth recruit for 2007 campaign
VESTAL, N.Y.- Binghamton University Volleyball head coach Glenn Kiriyama has announced that Mercedes Montford, a 5-10 middle blocker from Gilbert, Arizona has signed a national letter-of-intent to attend the school this fall. Montford joins Sandra Devito (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius), Michelle McDonough (Orland Hills, Ill./Andrew), and Lindsey Mueller (West Bend, WI/West Bend West) who will begin play for the Bearcats in the fall of 2007.
Montford is a three-year starter and team captain her senior year at Highland High School. She is a two-time first team all-region honoree and was named honorable mention all-state this fall. A very skilled and versatile athlete, she is expected to see time in all three front court positions.
"Mercedes is an intense competitor with strong club experience as a middle blocker," said Kiriyama, who is headed into his ninth year at the helm for BU this fall. "Her engaging personality and strong work ethic will be a welcome addition to the Bearcat squad."
Binghamton volleyball closed out its sixth season of competition at the Division-I level at 15-17 overall, with a 9-3 mark in conference play, good for a second-straight second place finish in the America East Conference.
