VESTAL, N.Y. -- The Binghamton University volleyball program has announced the National Letter of Intent signings of three student athletes set to join the team for the upcoming 2009 season.
Alexandrea Roland (Austin, Texas/Austin High) and Elana King (Bellmore, N.Y./Bellmore-JFK) will join the Bearcats as freshmen while Jen Fiorentino (Commack, N.Y./Hauppauge) will come in as a sophomore.
Roland is a three-year middle blocker from Austin High. She is a two-time all-district 25-5A selection. She is a two-time team MVP and has earned awards for best middle blocker and sportsmanship. She was named to the all-tournament team for the for the Westwood, Hays, AISD and Bowie invites, and has posted some of the highest blocking and hitting percentage numbers in Central Texas over the past two seasons. Roland is also a member of the Austin Junior Volleyball Club.
"Alex gives us some depth in the middle," said 11th year head coach Glenn Kiriyama. "She is a strong, physical player who has a huge upside. She has the talent to become a major contributor right away."
King hails from Bellmore, New York and tallied 11 kills, 35 assists, 29 digs and four blocks in leading her team to the Nassau Class A championship last fall. She was chosen as the MVP of Class A in Nassau County and was also selected to Newsday's all-Long Island team as she led her Bellmore JFK squad to a 13-1 mark. She also helped lead her Long Island team to a silver medal finish at the 2008 Empire State Games.
"Elana is a nice all-around player who can do a little bit of everything. She will play the right side as a setter, hitter or defensive specialist."
Fiorentino is a defensive specialist who is a three-time all-conference choice from Hauppauge High School. She is a two-time captain and was team MVP as a senior in 2007. She also plays beach volleyball and placed second in the 18U category at the 2007 USA Beach Volleyball Junior Tour in Long Beach.
"Jen will be asked to help out with our back row defense. She has the passion and experience to quickly become a key player for us on defense."

five starters and were conference runners-up in 2008. Binghamton
opens it 2009 season against Marshall at the Hofstra Tournament
on Friday, August 28.
