Volleyball picked fourth in America East Preseason Coaches' Poll

2007 America East Preseason Volleyball Poll

BOSTON -- Binghamton volleyball has been picked to finish fourth in the 2007 America East Preseason Coaches' Poll, the conference announced Monday.

The UMBC volleyball team, fresh off its championship runner-up finish in 2006, was chosen as the preseason favorite to win the 2007 America East Volleyball Championship. The Retrievers received four of the seven first-place votes and earned 34 points. Defending league champion Albany was picked second with the remaining three first-place votes and 30 points, followed by New Hampshire (23), Binghamton (22), Stony Brook (21), Maine (11) and Hartford (6) in the seven-team league.

The top four teams in the league will advance to the America East Championship, held November 16-18, with the winner of the tournament receiving the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Binghamton returns three starters from last year's team that finished second in the regular season with a 9-3 mark. Coming into the fall, the team has won a school-record 14 straight home matches and 21 of its last 27 conference matches (.777); the second best run of any America East team.

The Bearcats kick off the 2007 campaign on Friday, August 24 against South Carolina at the Asics Invitational hosted by the University of Delaware.
