Volleyball drops 2007 season opener to South Carolina in three games
NEWARK, Del. --Binghamton volleyball dropped a 3-0 decision to South Carolina in its 2007 season opener Friday afternoon at the Delaware/Asics Invitational in Newark, Del. The Gamecocks came out on top by scores of 32-30, 30-24, 30-16.
South Caroloina reversed a six-point deficit and fought off a game point at 29-30 en route to 1-0 match lead with a 32-30 win.
The Gamecocks led from wire-to-wire as they calmly chalked up 17 kills as a team for a 30-24 game two win and a 2-0 match lead.
In the third game, South Carolina continued to apply the pressure to the Bearcats with another 17 team kills to BU's seven and cruised home with a 30-16 game three win and a 3-0 match sweep.
South Carolina's Megan Laughlin led all hitters with 11 kills while committing just one attack error.
Junior Ashley Allen (Mill Creek, Wa.) led the Bearcats with eight kills, four blocks, and a .350 hitting percentage. Freshman Lindsey Mueller (West Bend,Wi.) added 23 assists and 12 digs in her collegiate debut, while junior Jaclyn Strader (Kettering, Ohio) chipped in with a team-high 13 digs.
The Bearcats take on host Delaware as well as Boston College on Saturday, at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. respectively.
Game Notes: The match was the first career meeting between the two programs...Both teams posted 15-17 records in 2006 and returned seven letterwinners to this year's squad.
