Bearcats fall to Syracuse at Big Orange Tournament

SYRACUSE, N.Y.--In its second match at the Big Orange Tournament, visiting Binghamton (1-1) was defeated 3-1 by host Syracuse (6-1) on Saturday afternoon in the Women's Building. The Orangewomen won 30-23, 30-25, 29-31, 30-24. The Bearcats conclude play in the season's first tournament with a 5 p.m. match with Siena this evening.

The two teams battled each other in close games throughout the match. Binghamton trailed just 24-21 in the first game before Syracuse closed the game with a 6-2 run. In the second game, the Bearcats battled back from a 17-9 deficit to even the score at 23-23, but the Orangewomen again closed the game with a run. In the third game, which featured nine ties, the Bearcats built leads of 5-1 and 10-5 before the Syracuse took back the lead at 18-17. Trailing 29-28, Binghamton fought off match point then won two more points for the win. The Bearcats then led 22-20 in the second game before the Orangewomen closed the match with a 10-2 streak.

Juniors Jen Smith (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) and Anne Crocus (Bethlehem, N.Y./Freedom) led the way for Binghamton, as each pounded 13 kills. Smith also had seven assists and 13 digs, while Crocus had a team-best three blocks. Freshman setter Ashley Meffert (Louisville, Ky./Fern Creek) had 41 assists and three aces. Senior defensive specialist Nicole Savin (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) had a team-high 14 digs, while junior outside hitter Morgan Jimerson (Grandview, N.Y./Nyack) added nine kills while making just three errors.
