Binghamton blanks Siena 3-0 in final match at Big Orange Tournament

Box Score

SYRACUSE, N.Y.--Junior middle hitter Anne Crocus (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) had 11 kills and freshman setter Ashley Meffert (Louisville, Ky./Fern Creek) capped her stellar play over the weekend with 36 assists as the Bearcats (2-1) cruised to a 3-0 victory over Siena (1-6) in the final match of the Big Orange Tournament. Earlier in the day, Binghamton dropped a 3-1 decision to the host Orangewomen.

The Bearcats pulled away from an 11-11 tie in the first game with a 9-1 run to establish a 20-12 lead. In the second game, Binghamton built a big lead midway through the game and never looked back. The third and final game went down to the wire before Meffert served four straight points to help put the match away.

The Bearcats, who displayed balanced production throughout the weekend, showed more of the same against Siena, as five players recorded at least seven kills. Junior outside hitter Michele Heck (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) tallied nine kills and five digs, while classmate Jen Smith (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) contributed eight kills and three service aces.

Smith led the squad over the weekend with 3.2 kills and 1.0 service ace per game. She and Crocus were each named to the all-tournament team.

Binghamton will next take on Colgate at 7 p.m. Tuesday evening in Hamilton. BU blanked the raiders 3-0 on Friday night in the first game of the Big Orange Tournament.
