Binghamton volleyball beats first-place UMBC in four games

Box Score

VESTAL, N.Y. -- Junior
Ashley Allen (Mill Creek, Wash.) tied for the match high with 15 kills, leading Binghamton (12-14, 4-2 AE) to a four-game triumph over first-place UMBC (19-6, 4-2 AE) in an America East Conference volleyball match on Friday evening at West Gym. The Bearcats won by scores of 30-16, 30-28, 30-20, 30-14.

"The players are really excited to get this win," head coach Glenn Kiriyama said. "UMBC is a great team and they knocked us out of the (America East) Tournament last year so this is an important victory for us."

Senior captain Kathleen Schauer (Littleton, Colo.) and freshman Michelle McDonough (Orland Hills, Ill.) each posted 12 kills. McDonough also added 11 digs and senior Jacki Kane (Centennial, Colo.) nailed eight kills and nine blocks.

The key to the victory came at the net, where the Bearcats outblocked the Retrievers 17-3. Kane and sophomore
Dawn Lammert (Sussex, Wis.) each recorded a pair of solo blocks.

The Bearcats and Retrievers will have Saturday off before heading to Baltimore to meet again Sunday at 4 p.m.
