BU falls to UMBC in America East opener
Bearcats lose in four sets to Retrievers

BALTIMORE, MD.-- Senior captain Michelle McDonough had a game-high 18 kills for the Binghamton volleyball team in a conference-opening loss to UMBC.

The Bearcats dropped their first America East match of the season 3-1 (25-23, 15-25, 20-25, 21-25), bringing their overall record to 5-11 on the year.

BU jumped out to a one set to none lead, but could not hold off UMBC as they controlled the next three sets. The Retrievers out hit BU .265 to .145. UMBC found their defense behind a 10-3 blocking advantage, creating difficult attacking opportunities for the Bearcats.

Anna Lejina tallied a double-double for BU with 15 kills and 13 digs while junior setter Julie Chambers dished out 38 assists. Freshman libero Xiomara Ortiz had a game-high 16 digs for the Bearcats.

Up next for Binghamton is their home-opener against New Hampshire, Friday October 8 at 7 p.m.
