Binghamton volleyball loses five-set match to VCU

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. - Sophomore hitter
Michelle McDonough had 18 kills and nine digs but it wasn't enough for Binghamton (3-7) to overcome Virginia Commonwealth (5-4) in a 3-2 match (25-21, 21-25, 25-22, 20-25, 14-16) at the Marriot Jefferson Cup on Saturday afternoon.

The Bearcats won the first and the third sets and used a ferocious rally in the fifth set to tie the game at 14-14 but eventually succumbed to the Rams.

In the deciding set, the Bearcats faced deficits of 9-4 and 12-6 but were able to climb back.

"It was a pretty good team effort," head coach Glenn Kiriyama said. "We put in a great effort at the end to make the comeback in the final match."

Senior Ashley Allen tallied 17 kills at a .424 clip for the Bearcats while sophomore setter Lindsey Mueller racked up 46 assists and 11 digs.

Binghamton also had five blocks apiece from junior
Dawn Lammert and sophomore Mercedes Montford.

Senior Jaclyn Strader was spectacular on the defensive end, coming up with a team-high 15 digs.

VCU was paced by Ariel Newman's 19 kills and Laryssa Goncalves match-high 27 digs.

Binghamton returns to action in its home debut on Tuesday against Colgate at 7 p.m. in the West Gym.
