Binghamton volleyball splits final two matches at Villanova Wildcat Classic

VILLANOVA, PA.--Binghamton (3-4) split its final two matches at the Villanova Wildcat Classic, losing to the host school 3-0 before blanking Virginia Commonwealth 3-0. The Bearcats placed third in the two-day tourney.

Against Villanova, BU was defeated 30-14, 30-23, 30-12. The Bearcats surrendered 54 kills and struggled on their offensive side, combining 21 kills with 21 errors. Senior hitter Michele Heck (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) collected seven kills and classmate Jen Smith (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) added five kills. Sophomore setter Ashley Meffert (Louisville, Ky./Fern Creek) recorded 14 assists and 12 digs.

In the afternoon match, the Bearcats' offense was sharp in a 30-23, 30-26, 30-23 victory over VCU. Senior middle hitter Anne Crocus (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem) totalled 19 kills with only one error (.692) and added four blocks. Senior
Jen Smith (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) contributed 13 kills and 10 digs, senior Michele Heck (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) had nine kills and a team-high 17 digs and sophomore setter Ashley Meffert (Louisville, Ky./Fern Creek) handed out 40 assists with 10 digs.

"We played a very spirited match," head coach Glenn Kiriyama said of the VCU contest. "We really played well in all facets of the game. We covered the court really well and Anne was unstoppable at the net."

Binghamton will next compete in the George Washington Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
