Women's Basketball Quotes

Head Coach Rich Conover

On the 2006-07 season

"I don't look at this year as a rebuilding year. Certainly we lost three seniors that were the backbone of the program during their four years here but I think last year one of our trademarks was depth so now we have a lot of talented players like Laura Sario, Laura Franceski and Juta Jahilo that can step right in. I think we have a lot of the pieces, it's probably just going to be a work in progress and I think we'll be a very good team as the year progresses."

About player outlook for this year

"I think Laura Sario will have a big year for her junior season. When Rachel went down last year, she was our leading scorer. Laine (Kurpniece) has a chance to be a first-team preseason America East Conference pick and a couple of the freshman could have good seasons. Erica Carter can really shoot the ball Darryll Peterson is an explosive player and Muffy Sadler is an outstanding player that can give Shea (Kenny) a rest."

On Laura Sario playing with Finnish National Team

"I think with Laura playing this summer and early fall with her Finnish National Team she gained a lot of confidence, playing against some of the best players in the world, and did quite well, and practiced against some of the best players in her country day-in, day-out. There's a confidence to her this year, much more vocal, and I think she's really comfortable and knows she's going to have a big year."

Senior guard Shea Kenny

On replacing Rachel Laws

"We just have a lot of people who are able to step into her shoes. Rebecka Lindgren is obviously a great shooter with a great pull up jump shot and she can create for herself. All three of the newcomers have the capability to come in and give us very good minutes. Darryll (Peterson) is a very athletic player, very quick and she can take anyone to the basket one-on-one. She reminds me a lot of the way Rachel Laws played and has the potential to do big things the way Rachel did.

Muffy (Sadler) is a very good point guard who can see the floor very well and is smart in what she's doing. I think she's going to be a great person to have come in and Erica (Carter) has a dead on shot. You can't leave her open. She's like Bluesy, (former Bearcats guard Jen Blues) she can put it up and have it go in.

On being the point guard and playmaker

"I haven't really thought about it but I'm not worried. I'm so confident in all of our players that I know whoever I throw it to, they're going to be able to make something happen. I think it's a good thing that were not going to have one go-to player, that we have so many threats and that any person can score or get the assists. I think that's really going to be a good thing".

About the team's style of play

"Our post players are very good. We are going to be looking to go inside but we are very well rounded and anyone can score at anytime. We will go into the post but we also have the shooters outside that will be able to knock down the shot when people are doubling inside".

On home court and hosting the 2007 America East Tournament

"Last year we were 11-2 at home, we play well here and have a great time playing here. The fact that we can come here and we have our conference tournament here is such a huge thing. You have to protect your home court and that's what it comes down to. You don't want anyone to walk onto your court and beat you. We want people to be afraid to step on the court here, especially if we're going to be closing it out here".

Junior center Laine Kurpniece

On this year's team

"I feel like we have good players this year who are working hard. We have guards who are as good as Jen Blues and Rachael Laws and we have a lot of posts who are solid. We have a chance to be a good team. It's early to say but I think everyone can score on this team, kind of like we did last year".

Junior guard Laura Sario

On the loss of Rachel Laws, Jen Blues and Jen Haubrich

"This year's team is different. I feel like we still have that talent and all the potential but we still have work to do before the season starts. Things are going to be a little different for us this year because we have bigger post players and I think that's going to be good for us".

About this year's outlook

"With all the talent on this team we have all the potential, now everyone just needs to step up. I definitely feel like we have a lot of players who are going to put up some bigger numbers when they get more playing time. I feel like we still have a solid team and this should be a good year for us think we have all the stuff we need for a good team. I also think this is the closest team that I've been part of since coming to Binghamton and that will help us on the court".
