Sario named second-team all-conference, Kurpniece selected to third team
VESTAL, N.Y.-- Junior guard Laura Sario (Espoo, Finland) and junior center Laine Kurpniece (Riga, Latvia) have earned America East All-Conference honors for the 2006-07 women's basketball season. Sario was named to the second team while Kurpniece got selected to the third team. The voting was compiled by the nine conference head coaches.
Sario, who was named to the All-Rookie team in 2005, leads Binghamton with 13.0 points and 2.58 assists per game this season. She ranked ninth in the conference in scoring and was named the America East Player of the Week for Feb. 12-18. Sario led the Bearcats in scoring a team-best 11 times this season and in assists 10 times. Her career-high of 25 points came against Cornell on Jan. 8. Heading into the upcoming America East Conference Tournament, Sario ranks ninth all time in school history with 170 career assists and is fourth with a .380 three-point field goal percentage.
"Our team started to gel once Laura came back from her early-season injury," head coach Rich Conover said. "It is a well-deserved honor for her."
Kurpniece, who earned second-team honors last season, ranks second with 11.0 points per game and has pulled down a team-best 5.7 rebounds per contest. Against America East opponents, she has averaged 12.2 points and 6.2 rebounds per contest. Kurpniece has reached double figures in scoring in Binghamton's last 11 games as well as 17 times in the past 20 outings. She has reached the 20-point mark in scoring twice this season and has recorded four double-doubles. In addition, Kurpniece's career field goal percentage of .507 ranks first all-time in school history.
"Laine had a great second half of the conference season," head coach Rich Conover said. "She has become a great offensive player and a true lost-post threat."
Binghamton (11-18) is the No. 4 seed for the upcoming America East Conference Tournament, which will be at the Events Center this coming weekend. The Bearcats' first game is against No. 5 Boston on Friday at 8:30 p.m. in the quarterfinal round.
