RATON, FLA. -- Sophomore guard Niki McCoy led three players in
double-figures with a game-high 14 points as Akron (1-1) defeated
Binghamton (1-2) 55-44 in a non-conference women's basketball
game at the Florida Atlantic Tip-Off Classic Saturday night.
Binghamton goes 1-1 on the weekend.
After a back-and-forth affair through most of the first half,
Akron took control of the game in the final minutes before the
break. Leading 25-24 with 3:29 to play, the Zips extended their
lead to nine points, 35-26, courtesy of a 10-2 run. During that
span, McCoy posted eight of her 14 points, capped off by a three-pointer
at the buzzer.
Binghamton
rallied in the second half, pulling to within 50-44 with 5:32
remaining in the game, but would get no closer as Akron closed
out the 11-point victory.
"It was a tale of two halves defensively" said head
coach Rich Conover. "I thought we played poor defense in
the first half. We looked better in the second, but Akron did
a good job in holding us off."
In
addition to McCoy's 14 points and game-high seven rebounds, Akron
also got ten points each from freshman guard Sarah Tokodi and
senior forward Jessie Crooks.
Senior guard Rebecka Lindgren (Oskarshamn,
Sweden) paced the Bearcats as she posted her third straight double-figure
game, finishing with a team-high 12 points while junior forward
Brianna Thompson (Chehalis, Wash.)
and junior guard Laura Sario (Espoo,
Finland) each added nine points.
Binghamton returns home to face Fairleigh Dickinson on Wednesday
at 3 p.m.
