women's basketball loses 49-46 at Canisius
BUFFALO, N.Y.-- Brittnee Russell
sank four free throws in the final 44 second as Canisius (3-2)
rallied past Binghamton (0-4) in a non-conference women's basketball
game on Saturday afternoon at the Koessler Athletic Center.
Russell, who finished the game with 20 points, nailed a pair
of free throws to put the Golden Griffs up 47-46 with 44 seconds
remaining in regulation. The Bearcats missed their ensuing shot
and Russell grabbed the rebound and was fouled with 22 seconds
remaining. She sank both free throws and Binghamton missed a
game-tying three pointer at the buzzer.
After trailing 28-18 at the half, Binghamton came roaring back
to tie the game up at 37-37 with 7:08 left in regulation. With
3:13 left, the Bearcats took a 44-43 lead on a jumper by junior
Ward. From there, the lead swung back and fourth until Russell
stepped up in the final minute of the game.
Ward finished with a team-high 13 points while senior guard Erica
Carter added 11 points and six rebounds. Sophomore point
Holmes chipped in nine points, a season-high six assists
and three rebounds.
Binghamton won the rebounding battle 38-31 but was undone by
a season-high 24 turnovers. In addition, while the Bearcats went
8-for-14 at the free throw line, the Golden Griffs made all eight
of their attempts.
Binghamton heads to Siena on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. game.
