Binghamton women's basketball defeats Cornell 75-60 in final non-conference game
VESTAL, N.Y.-- Using a 30-8 run to start the second half, Binghamton (9-4) defeated Cornell (3-10) 75-60 on Monday night at the Events Center in its final non-conference game of the season. The win was the Bearcats' sixth in their last seven outings.
Binghamton shot a season-high 60.0 percent from the field, including 70.0 percent in the second half, and all 11 players were in the scoring column. Sophomore center Laine Kurpniece (Riga, Latvia) had a game-high 15 points, senior guard Jen Blues (Overland Park, Kan.) added 14 points and senior guard Rachel Laws (Wyncote, Pa.) chipped in 10 points.
Jeomi Maduka led Cornell with 15 points. Shanna Scarselletta added 14 points.
"We played very well defensively in the second half," head coach Rich Conover said. "The reason we shot the ball so well is because the defense set up a lot of good scoring opportunities."
The Bearcats were up 37-32 at the break but a basket by Maduka trimmed the lead to three points just 24 seconds into the second half. From there, however, the Bearcats went on a 15-0 run in a span of 4:05 to take a 52-34 advantage with 15:01 left to go.
Things kept going the Bearcats way as a 9-2 run in a span of 2:49 increased the lead to 67-40 with 9:40 left to go.
Binghamton hosts Stony Brook on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
