VESTAL, N.Y. - The Binghamton men's and women's basketball teams
will participate in Coaches vs. Cancer Weekend, a program started
by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) as an
effort to raise awareness in the fight against cancer. At both
the men's and women's games this coming weekend, there will be
several fundraisers designed to raise money for the American
Cancer Society (ACS).
The women's team faces Vermont on Saturday at 1 p.m. while the
men's team faces the Catamounts on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Started in 1993, Coaches vs. Cancer has raised more than $20
million to benefit the American Cancer Society's efforts in research,
advocacy, education and patient services. The program leverages
the strength and celebrity of the nation's basketball coaches
to reduce cancer risk though education programs and to raise
funds for the ACS.
Binghamton fans will able to contribute by having their photo
take with Baxter the Bearcat for a $5.00 donation. Others will
mak pledges based on the number of points the Bearcats scored
during the game. Kids will be able to take a shot at a mini-hoop
to win prizes for a $1.00 donation. There will also be a 50/50
raffle at each game. In addition, all fans will be able simply
make a donation to ACS.
Other activities taking place at the games are a free Body Mass
Index (BMI) screening, a tobacco education/ lung machine demonstration,
physical activity and nutrition information, a "Man to Man"
prostate cancer support group as well as general health information.
