Binghamton women's basketball topples St. Rose 96-51 in exhibition game

Box Score

VESTAL, N.Y.-- Binghamton women's basketball put four players in double figures and received points from all 13 players in a 96-51 exhibition victory over visiting St. Rose Friday night at the Events Center. The Bearcats jumped out to a 22-point halftime bulge thanks to 53% shooting, and rolled to the comfortable win over the Division II Golden Knights, who were plagued by 29 turnovers.

Four days after posting a 43-point exhibition win over Le Moyne, the Bearcats were equally impressive in the 45-point victory.

"Overall I'm pleased with our effort," head coach Rich Conover said. "We shot the ball well again, ran the floor and attacked the basket. The players are playing well together and are communicating. They really tried to do what we asked. We're committed to trying to get up and down the floor and score some easy baskets.

Senior guard Rachel Laws (Wyncote, Pa.) hit 6-of-8 from the floor for a game-high 13 points and classmate Jen Blues (Overland Park, Kan.) scored all 12 of her first points in the first half as BU staked itself to a 48-26 lead. Sophomore forward Juta Jahilo (Helsinki, Finland) and second-year center Laine Kurpniece (Riga, Latvia) added 11 and 10 points, respectively.

"Juta (Jahilo) is healthy this year and is getting more and more consistent," Conover said. "She did a nice job tonight. Jen (Blues) is a proven scorer and with minutes she will put points up on the board."

On defense, BU forced 16 St. Rose turnovers in the first half and limited the visitors to eight field goals.

"Tonight our defense was a little better but it's still a worry for us," Conover said.

Binghamton opens the regular season at Kansas on November 20.
