women's basketball loses 72-54 at Hartford
WEST HARTFORD, Conn. -- Junior
guard Jackie Smith scored a game-high 18 points, leading first-place
Hartford (22-3, 13-0 AE) to a 72-54 win over Binghamton (9-18,
5-9 AE) in an America East Conference women's basketball game
on Thursday evening at Chase Arena. The game, which was regionally
televised, marked the third straight setback for the Bearcats.
Smith was one of three Hartford players to reach double figures
in scoring. Senior forward Erica Beverly finished with 15 points,
a game-high seven assists and five rebounds while freshman guard
Daphne Elliot added 11 points.
For Binghamton, senior forward Darryll
Peterson and junior guard Jackie
Ward each scored a team-best 16 points. Peterson's total
represents her season high.
The Hawks went on an 7-0 run in a span of 2:50 to go up 17-10
with 8:58 left in the first half. Beverly scored back-to-back
baskets during that span. Later in the half, Hartford outscored
the Bearcats 12-0 over a 3:40 span to go up 33-17 with 3:08 remaining
In the second half, the Hawks extended their lead to 59-39 with
7:25 left in regulation. Smith scored 15 of her points in the
final 20 minutes of play.
For the game, Hartford shot 51.8 percent, hitting 29-of-56 field
goals. In addition, the Hawks made 11 of their 21 three-point
field goal attempts.
Binghamton returns home to face Maine on Saturday at 2 p.m.
