Binghamton women's basketball defeats Le Moyne 65-58 in exhibition game
VESTAL, N.Y.-- Senior center Laine Kurpniece (Riga, Lativa) scored a game-high 18 points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds, leading Binghamton to a 65-58 win over Le Moyne in an exhibition women's basketball game on Thursday night at the Events Center. The win marked the first of two preseason games for the Bearcats.
Senior forward Brianna Thompson (Chehalis, Wash.) added 17 points and sophomore Erica Carter (Naperville, Ill.) chipped in 13 points. Vanessa Holden led Le Moyne with 15 points while Jacquelin Precious had 11 points and Kim Wagoner netted 10 points.
Kurpniece broke a 56-56 deadlock when she converted a layup with 2:30 remaining to give Binghamton the lead for good. Thompson, meanwhile, converted three of four free throws in the final 1:20 to ice the game.
Binghamton appeared to take control of the game, bolting out to a 44-31 lead with 15:23 left in the second half. From there, however, the Dolphins went on a 16-4 run to trim the deficit to 49-47 with 8:15 remaining. Carter responded with a three pointer at the 7:54 mark but Le Moyne counter with a 9-2 run to go up 56-54 with 4:23 left to go.
Thompson tied the game with a layup at the 3:56 mark, starting the decisive 9-2 Bearcat run to close out the game.
Binghamton concludes its exhibition schedule with a 7 p.m. game against St. Rose at the Events Center on Tuesday.
