women's basketball comes away with 69-64 win against Maine
N.Y.- Sophomore center Laine
Kurpniece (Riga, Latvia) scored a team-high 20 points,
leading Binghamton (13-7, 6-3 AE) to a 69-64 victory over Maine
(6-14, 2-7 AE) in an America East women's basketball matchup
Saturday afternoon at the Events Center. With the win, the Bearcats
bounce back from their loss at UMBC this past Wednesday.
Kurpniece converted 10-of-11 free throws and reached the 20-point
mark for the fourth time this season. Sophomore gaurd Laura
Sario (Espoo, Finland) scored 13 points, grabbed four
rebounds and collected four assists. Freshman forward Laura
Franceski (Moscow, Pa.) also had a solid performance,
registering nine points and eight rebounds.
The Bearcats opened up with an early 17-2 run in the first half
to given themselves a comfortable 19-7 lead with 9:53 remaining
in the first half. Maine, however, was able to fight its way
back and cut the lead to 31-24 at the half.
Binghamton came out firing early in the second half and increased
its lead to 40-27 with 17:15 remaining in the second half. From
there, the Black Bears were able to take the lead 47-45 with
9:04 remaining in the game as part of a 20-5 run. The Bearcats,
however, was able to counter the run by Maine with a 11-2 run
of their own with 5:57 remaining, to take a 56-49 lead .
The Bearcats were able to close out the victory from the free-throw
line. They were able to hit 10 out of their last 12 foul shots
in the last 1:12 of the second half.
forward Bracey Barker led Maine with a game-high 21 points and
a game-high nine rebounds. Junior guard Ashley Underwood netted
14 points and tallied a game-high nine assists.
Binghamton heads to New Hampshire on Thursday for a 7 p.m. game.
