women's basketball defeats Maine 70-43
now program-best 7-2 in America East play, remain perfect at
VESTAL, N.Y. Senior guard Jackie Ward
poured in a game-high 20 points and junior point guard Andrea
Holmes finished with 18 points, leading Binghamton (14-8,
7-2 AE) to a 70-43 win over Maine (3-18, 1-8 AE) in an America
East women's basketball game on Saturday afternoon at the Events
Center. The win improved the Bearcats' record to a program-best
8-0 at the Events Center. In addition, Binghamton is also off
to its best start in its 10 seasons in the America East Conference.
Ward, whose point total represented her season high, also added
a game-high five assists and added seven rebounds. Freshman guard
Jasbriell Swain finished with eight
points, a career-high and game-high 14 rebounds, four assists,
a block and two steals while junior forward Viive
Rebane turned in a seven-point, 11 rebound, three-assist,
one-block and two-steal performance.
"We played very well in the second half today," head
coach Nicole Scholl said. "Jackie had a great game and we
did a good job on the boards."
Nursing a 29-25 lead with 40 seconds left in the first half,
the Bearcats turned to Ward, who scored a pair of basketball,
giving Binghamton an eight-point lead at the break. She picked
right up where she left off after the break, scoring the first
eight points to put the Bearcats up 41-25 with 17:24 left in
Ward also played a significant role in the Bearcats' other key
run, an 11-0 blitz in a span of 2:59 to put them ahead 61-36
with 7:08 left in the contest. She had five points during that
Ashleigh Roberts led Maine with 14 points while Shareka Maner
grabbed a team-best 13 rebounds.
Binghamton hosts UMBC on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in a game televised
regionally by Time Warner Sports. Both the Bearcats and Retrievers
enter the game with 7-2 records in the conference, trailing only
9-0 Boston University. UMBC beat Binghamton 55-38 at home back
on Jan. 12.
NOTES: Ward and Roberts were named the America East Players
of the Game, sponsored by Security Mutual Life ... the Bearcats'
previous-best start at the Events Center was 7-0 during the 2005-06
campaign. The previous-best start in America East play was 6-2
during the 2003-04 season ... Holmes, who is now averaging a
career-high 14.8 points per game, now has 1,035 career points
and moves into 11th place all-time in program history. Against
Maine, she passed Helene Thomas (1981-85), who had 1,018 points
and Jen Blues (2002-06) who finished with 1,019 points.
