Women's basketball loses 70-52 at Sacred Heart

FAIRFIELD, Conn.-- Junior center Kaitlin Sowinski scored a game-high 20 points, leading Sacred Heart (1-3) to a 70-52 win over visiting Binghamton (0-4) in a non-conference women's basketball game on Sunday afternoon at the Pitt Center. The loss marked the final game in the Bearcats' season-opening run of four straight road contests.

The Pioneers broke open a tight game with a 12-2 run to go up 45-33 with 14:55 left in the second half. Sowinski had six of her points during that run. From there, the margin grew to 68-47 with 3:37 remaining before the two teams emptied their benches.

Senior center Laine Kurpniece (Riga, Latvia) led the Bearcats with 12 points and seven rebounds. In the process, she moved into 15th place all time in school history with 851 career points, passing Katrina Roggenbaum (who scored 850 points from 1990-94). Senior forward Briannna Thompson (Chehalis, Wash.) added 10 points while senior forward Juta Jahilo (Helsinki, Finland) chipped in eight points.

Senior guard Lisa Moray and freshman guard Maggie Cosgrove each netted 12 points for Sacred Heart.

Binghamton has its home opener on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. against Bucknell at the Events Center.
