women's basketball defeats Siena 72-59
explode for 51 points in the second half
VESTAL, N.Y.-- Junior point guard Andrea
Holmes scored a game-high 21 points and junior forward Viive Rebane finished with 20 points and
10 rebounds, leading Binghamton (4-4) to a 72-59 win over Siena
(1-5) in a non-conference women's basketball game on Tuesday
night at the Events Center. With the victory, the Bearcats are
now a perfect 3-0 on their home floor this season.
Rebane had 10 of her points in the first half but both teams
struggled offensively and the Bearcats clung to a 21-19 lead
at the break. In the second half, however, Binghamton reeled
off 51 points to pull away for the win. It marked the highest
point total for the Bearcats in a half since they scored 53 points
in the opening 20 minutes at Bryant on Dec. 7, 2009.
"I thought we made good adjustments at the half," head
coach Nicole Scholl said. "We had problems in the first
half but made a good run towards the end of the game."
Holmes, meanwhile, scored 16 of her points in the second half
against the Saints, sinking 10 free throws in the process. It
marked the 12th time in her career that she has reached the 20-point
mark in scoring. She also added six assists.
Nursing a 45-44 lead, Binghamton went on a 16-1 run in a span
of 7:03 to take a 61-45 lead with 3:16 left in regulation. The
Bearcats sank three three-pointers during that span.
Sophomore forward Kara Elofson added
13 points and seven rebounds for the Bearcats.
For Siena, Maja Gerlyng scored a team-best 15 points while Serena
Moore and Cristina Centeno each added 13 points.
Binghamton shot 50 percent for the game, hitting 23 of its 46
field goal attempts.
NOTES: Rebane, who now has seven career double-doubles,
was selected as the America East Player of the Game, sponsored
by Security Mutual Life. Her 20 points tied her career-high,
which she set against New Hampshire on Jan. 24, 2008 ... the
last time a pair of Binghamton players reached the 20-point mark
in the same game came on Dec. 2, 2009, also against Siena. Current
senior guard Jackie Ward had 26 points
and Holmes added 21 points ... the 72 points scored against Siena
marked a season-high for the Bearcats.
