Binghamton women's basketball beats Stony Brook 73-72

Senior guard Laura Sario (Espoo, Finland) scored a season-high 23 points, leading Binghamton (10-16, 8-6 AE) to a 73-72 win over Stony Brook (7-20, 1-12 AE) in an America EastConference women’s basketball game on Wednesday night at the SBU Sports Complex. The win third in the past four games for the Bearcats.

Sario reaches the 20-point mark for the second time this season and fourth time in her career. Senior center Laine Kurpniece (Riga, Latvia) added 15 points and junior forward Laura Franceski (Moscow, Pa.) chipped in 13 points. Senior forward Juta Jahilo (Helsinki, Finland) had nine points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

Binghamton broke a 33-33 tie early in the second half to take a 47-36 lead with 12:30 remaining in the second half. From there, however, the Seawolves roared back to tie the game at 48-48 with 9:25 left to go.

The Bearcats answered right back with a 12-3 spurt to go up 60-51. Still, Stony Brook refused to go quietly, pulling to within 72-70 with 21 seconds left. Senior forward Brianna Thompson hit one of two free throws with 10 seconds to go.

Binghamton heads to New Hampshire for a 1 p.m. game on Saturday.

NOTES: Sario now has a pair of 20-point games this season and four for her career.
