women's basketball beats Stony Brook 63-43 in AE opener

nets 14 points, Holmes and Swain notch double-doubles

VESTAL, N.Y.-- Junior forward Viive Rebane
finished with 14 points, nine rebounds, three assists, two blocks
and a steal, leading Binghamton (8-6, 1-0 AE) to a 63-43 win
over Stony Brook (3-11, 0-2 AE) in an America East Women's Basketball
Game on Thursday night at the Events Center. The win is the fifth
straight home triumph for the Bearcats as well as their first
season-opening conference win since 2008. Furthermore, the 20-point
margin of victory is the largest for Binghamton this season.
Rebane was one of four Bearcat players to reach double figures
in scoring. Junior point guard Andrea Holmes
and freshman guard Jasbriell Swain each
recorded a double-double. Holmes had 13 points and tied a career
high with 12 rebounds while Swain also had 13 points and added
10 rebounds. Senior guard Jackie Ward
chipped in 10 points.
"I was very happy with how we played, especially on the
defensive end," head coach Nicole Scholl said. "This
was a good start to conference play and we continue to do well
on our home court.
Down 11-10 nine minutes into the game, Binghamton closed out
the first half on a 20-6 run to go up 30-17 at the break. Rebane
led the way with 10 points in the opening 20 minutes of play.
In the second half, the Bearcats went on a 16-3 run in a span
of 3:43 to go up 63-39 with 2:48 left in regulation.
For Stony Brook sophomore guard Sam Landers led all scorers with
16 points. Sophomore center Juanita Cochran added 10 points and
10 rebounds while junior forward Destiny Jacobs grabbed a team-high
11 rebounds.
Binghamton remains at home and will face New Hampshire on Sunday
at 2 p.m.
NOTES: Rebane and Landers were named the America East
Players of the Game, sponsored by Security Mutual Life ... the
last time a pair of Bearcat players recorded a double-double
in the same game came on Dec. 28, 2009 against Fordham. Rebane
had 12 points and 13 rebounds while Theodora Panteli had 10 points
and 12 rebounds ... Swain now has two consecutive double-doubles
and five for the season ... Holmes now has 901 career points
and remains in 16th place all-time in program history.
