Immediate Release: October 10, 2006 Contact: David O'Brian (dobrian@binghamton.edu) Phone: 607-777-6478 Binghamton women's basketball team takes part in "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer" Walk VESTAL, N.Y.-- For the fifth consecutive year, the Binghamton women's basketball team took part in the "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk." Collectively, the Bearcats raised over $1800.00 in pledges for the Oct. 1 event, which was sponsored by the American Cancer Society. We have had a lot of success with this event in the past," senior point guard Shea Kenny said. " The atmosphere of the walk is always friendly and fun. We enjoy giving back to thecommunity and this event has been a good way for us to do so." "The Bearcat women have been participating in the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast walk for several years and they are such a great inspiration to the young girls that attend," said Gina Chapman of the American Cancer Society. "The women's basketball team not only walks but they (also) collect donations to help fund a cure for breast cancer. To see their enthusiasm year after year is wonderful and so appreciated." Kenny was the team's coordinator for the event this year. She was responsible for setting up the team's website, which was essential to raising financial support. "For this event, I registered our whole team," she said. "I signed us up on the website and E-mailed individuals about our participation. I then created a team webpage for us. After registering the team, all the girls had to invidivually go on and sign themselves up as well. From there, people were able to make donations directly to your website or give us money individually which we brought to the event." Besides helping out the American Cancer Society, the event has been a source of bonding the team before the season starts. "This event gives us a chance as a team spend time together outside of the gym," Kenny said. " We were able to bond a lot amongst ourselves as we walk around Binghamton. It provided a good amount of time for us to get to know each other better, laugh, joke, and have a good time with each other and all our different personalities." |
