Conference Release

Laws named America East Conference Women's Basketball Co-Player of the Week, Sario named Co-Rookie of the Week

VESTAL, N.Y.-- Junior forward Rachel Laws (Wyncote, Pa.) has been named the America East Conference Co-Player of the Week and freshman guard Laura Sario (Espoo, Finland) has been named the Co-Rookie of the Week for Jan. 24-30. Laws shares the honor with Albany's Danielle Hutcheson while Sario split her award with Danielle Hood of Hartford.

This marks the first week in Binghamton's four seasons in the America East Conference that it has had both a Player and Rookie of the Week. The last time any America East Conference school had both a Player and Rookie of the Week was Dec. 20-Jan. 2 when Northeastern's Maralene Zwarich was named the Co-Player of the Week and Shaleyse Smallwood was the Rookie of the Week.

This marks the second time this season and the fourth time in her career that Laws has received a weekly honor from the America East Conference. She was the Player of the Week for Feb. 23-29, 2004, the Co-Player of the Week for Dec. 6-12, 2004 and the Rookie of the Week for Feb. 16-22, 2003.

Laws scored 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds on Wednesday as the Bearcats upset conference-leading Vermont 69-64. It was the first time ever that the Bearcats had beaten the Catamounts. She then followed up with a 19-point, eight rebound performance on Saturday as the Bearcats defeated Northeastern 75-53. In the past six games, the Bearcats have gone 5-1 and Laws has averaged 14.8 ppg and 8.2 rpg during that span. She has also turned in a pair of double-doubles.

Currently, Laws ranks fourth in the America East Conference with 15.4 points per game and fifth in rebounding with 7.3 rebounds per game.

Sario earns Co-Rookie honors for the second time in three weeks. She continued her impressive season with 15 points, eight rebounds, a career-high five assists, one block and one steal against Northeastern on Saturday. Earlier in the week, she chipped in eight points, five rebounds and one assist in the Bearcats’ first ever win against Vermont. Sario has reached double figures in seven of the Bearcats’ last eight games.

Sario currently ranks second on the team with 9.2 points per game.

Binghamton (6-11, 5-3 AE) travels to first place Hartford (12-5, 6-2 AE) on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
