Binghamton women's basketball uses late surge to defeat UMBC 61-52

VESTAL, N.Y.-- Senior guard Rachel Laws (Wyncote, Pa.) led a balanced attack with a team-high 16 points and seven rebounds, leading Binghamton (14-11, 7-7 AE) to a 61-52 win over UMBC (15-10, 7-7 AE) in an America East Conference women's basketball game on Saturday afternoon at the Events Center. The win snapped the Bearcats' four-game losing streak.

Binghamton had four player reach double figures in scoring for the fourth time this season. Junior guard Shea Kenny (Miller Place, N.Y.) buried four three-point shots and had 15 points while senior guard Jen Blues (Overland Park, Kan.) and sophomore center Laine Kurpniece (Rita, Latvia) each chipped in 10 points.

UMBC jumped out to an 11-3 lead in the opening 4:23 The Bearcats countered with a 11-5 run of their own to narrow the deficit to 16-14 with 9:13 remaining in the half. Binghamton closed out the first half with solid defense and were able to take a 29-26 lead into the locker room.

Both teams came out cold to start the second half. Binghamton hit just two of their first nine shots, while the Retrievers converted only two of their first 10 shots. UMBC, however, was able to tie the score up at 40-40 with 9:56 remaining in the game. The game was tied 50-50 when the Bearcats ended the game with a decisive 11-2 run. During this run Laws made a clutch three-point play by with 1:55 remaining to give Binghamton a 56-52 lead that it would not relinquish.

The Retrievers were lead by Sharri Rohde who netted 20 points.

The Bearcats return to action on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Albany.

NOTES: The game against UMBC marked the final home game for Laws, Blues and senior forward Jeb Haubrich (Bow, N.H) ... Blues needs just 10 points to become the ninth player in school history to reach the 1,000-point mark for her career.
