basketball loses 84-57 at Vermont in regular-season finale

Vt.- Junior guard Courtnay Pilypaitis poured in a game-high 23
points, leading Vermont (18-11, 12-4 AE) to an 84-57 win over
Binghamton (13-16, 8-8 AE) in an America East women's basketball
game on Saturday afternoon at Patrick Gym. The game marked the
final regular-season contest of the season for both squads.
Tied at 14-14 midway through the first half, the Catamounts went
on a 26-15 blitz to open up 40-29 at the break. Pilypaitis, the
2008 America East Player of the Year, netted nine of her points
during that span.
The Catamounts scored eight unanswered points in the opening
1:17 of the second half to go up 48-29. Junior guard May Kotsopoulos,
who finished with 14 points, had five points during that run
and Pilypaitis drained a three pointer.
From there, Vermont showed no signs of letting up, eventually
taking a 84-55 lead before junior guard Jackie
Ward,
who led the Bearcats with 11 points, converted a layup with 20
seconds remaining.
Freshman guard Andrea
Holmes
ended up with seven points, five assists, six rebounds and a
pair of steals. Freshman Viive
Rebane
grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
Binghamton is the No. 4 seed in the America East Tournament and
will face No. 5 UMBC in a quarterfinal game on Friday at noon.
