During halftime of Saturday's game, female athletes of all ages will be acknowledged during a ceremony on the court. The purpose of this event will be to celebrate and acknowledge the positive influence that sports participation has had in the lives of countless female athletes. There will be other related activities and giveaways on the concourse during the afternoon. The National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) was chartered by the U.S. Congress in 1986 to honor female athletic achievement and recognize the importance of sports and fitness participation for all girls and women. The official date for this year's NGWSD is Thursday, February 1 but with the Bearcats on the road at Stony Brook the preceding day, the Binghamton athletic department has chosen to observe it on the closest possible home date. NGWSD began in 1987 as a day to remember Olympic volleyball player Flo Hyman for her athletic achievements and her work to assure equality for women's sports. Hyman died of Marfan's Syndrome in 1986 while competing in a volleyball tournament in Japan. Since that time, NGWSD has evolved into a day to acknowledge the past and recognize current sports achievements, the positive influence of sports participation and the continuing struggle for equality and access for women in sports. For tickets, call (607) 777-SLAM PLEASE NOTE: In commemoration of National Women in Sports Day, Binghamton will hold its Second Annual Women's Athletics Luncheon and Auction on Thursday, Feb. 1 at the Events Center from 12-2 p.m. The cost for the luncheon is $25.00.
