Binghamton women's lacrosse falls to No. 20 Denver 18-15
N.Y. -- Junior Ali Flury had a game-high five goals and added
an assist to lead No. 20 Denver University to an 18-15 win over
Binghamton in the Bearcats season opener on Friday afternoon
at Duquesne University.
The Bearcats jumped out to an early with 28:41 to go in the first
half. At the 18:04 mark, off a goal by sophomore captain Beth
Binghamton took a 3-2 advantage. However, Denver dominated the
rest of the first half, running off four goals straight that
was part of a 12-4 run to put the Pioneers up 14-7 at the half.
stormed back in the second half, out-shooting Denver 23-14. The
Bearcats held the Pioneers without a goal for the last 21 minutes
and scored the last five goals of the game. However, it was not
enough to overcome the halftime deficit.
Sophomore Lisa Illig and freshman
led the Bearcats with four goals apiece, while Illig added an
assist. Moore found the back of the net off three attempts, while
fellow sophomore Kate
added a pair. Sophomore Ali
also added a pair of goals while dropping one assist. Sophomore
pulled in a game-high three ground balls.
"We're such a young team; I thought we had a lot of composure
in the second half. We pulled it together and I was very proud
of the way that we played the game," head coach Tony Zostant
commented after the game. "This was a great opportunity;
we think that Denver will be able to play with anyone in the
Binghamton hosts it's first home match of the season on Tuesday,
March 3, against Canisius. Game time is 3 p.m.
