Binghamton rolls to 16-9 win over Iona

Box Score

BINGHAMTON, N.Y.-- Sophomore midfielder Anna Riordan (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) recorded a game-high and career-high four goals and senior midfielder Laura Gabbamonte (Glen Cove, N.Y.) scored three times, powering Binghamton (2-4) to a 16-9 win over Iona (3-3) in a non-conference women's lacrosse game at Binghamton Alumni Stadium on Wednesday evening. The 16 goals represents a season high for the Bearcats.

Binghamton also got two goals and two assists each from sophomore midfielder
Lauren Wetherall (Bethpage, N.Y.), sophomore attack Heather Grose (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) and freshman midfielder Leanne Musso (Auburn, N.Y.). Sophomore attack Danielle Edwards (Horseheads, N.Y.) also had two goals and an assist while sophomore midfielder Lauren Chemotti (Skineatles, N.Y.) added a goal and two assists.

"Today was a good win for us because we had balanced scoring," head coach Emily Edmonston said. "We didn't just rely on one or two people to come through for us. A lot of people stepped up, especially in the second half.

Riordan scored all of her goals in the first half as the Bearcats built a 7-5 lead at the break. Binghamton then built a 10-5 lead in the opening 8:33 of the second half as Wetherall scored twice and Musso netted the other goal. Iona, however, wouldn't go away as it reeled off three consecutive goals to cut the deficit to 10-8 with 15:01 remaining in the game.

Following a timeout, Binghamton went on the decisive 6-1 run in the final 13:26 to seal the game. Gabbamonte scored all three of her goals during that span.

Binghamton outshot Iona by only 29-28 but senior goalie Christa Quon (Vestal, N.Y.) made 13 saves.

The Bearcats head to Stony Brook on Friday for a 7 p.m. for their first America East Conference game of the season.
