fall to Le Moyne 17-6
SYRACUSE, N.Y.--Freshman Lauren Wetherell (Bethpage, N.Y.), who had three goals in her first collegiate game Sunday night, netted four more goals on Wednesday, but Binghamton (0-2) was defeated 17-6 by the Dolphins of Le Moyne (2-3).
The Dolphins scored the first three goals of the game before Binghamton answered with a pair of tallies to get within 3-2. However, Le Moyne then opened up a commanding 11-3 lead late in the half, and took a 12-4 advantage into intermission. The Bearcats were outshot 45-27 and managed 32 ground balls, compared with 51 for their hosts.
Wetherell has now scored seven goals in her first two games at the collegiate level. Last season, Binghamton's two leading goal scorers each had found the net 10 times in 12 games. Junior attacker Ashley Cincotta (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland), the team's leading scorer a year ago, added her fifth goal of the season and freshman attacker Kelli Bennett (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) scored her second goal. Sophomore midfielder Erin Smith (Watertown, N.Y./Immaculate Heart) handed out a pair of assists, while classmate Laura Gabbamonte (Glen Cove, N.Y.) and freshman midfielder Kathy Van Voorhis (Fishers, N.Y./Victor Central School) each had one helper.
For the second straight game, juniors Allison Steinberg (Pearl River, N.Y.) and Danielle Zittel (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) shared duties in goal. Steinberg produced 10 saves and Zittel had eight.
The Bearcats will play their home opener on Friday at 3 p.m. against Niagara.
