Bearcats unable to recover from first-half deficit in 17-8 loss to Quinnipiac
HAMDEN, Conn.--Host Quinnipiac (7-7) cruised to a 10-2 halftime advantage over Binghamton (3-7) and went on to a 17-8 victory in a non-conference game played Sunday afternoon in Hamden. The Bobcats won for the seventh time in their last 10 games.
Quinnipiac opened the scoring just 4:14 into the game and led 4-1 midway through the first half. The game was all but settled late in the first half when the Bobcats stretched a 7-1 advantage by scoring three goals in a span of just 23 seconds in the closing 1:02 of the opening frame. The Bearcats netted six goals in the second stanza but never got any closer than the eight-goal halftime margin.
Junior attack Laura Gabbamonte (Glen Cove, N.Y.) led Binghamton with three goals, while freshman attack Becky Green (Altamont, N.Y./Guilderland) and sophomore center Lauren Wetherell (Bethpage, N.Y.) each tallied a goal and two assists.
The Bearcats converted three free-position goals but were outshot by a 37-23 margin. Quinnipiac also held a 16-11 edge in draw controls and 34-28 advantage in ground balls. It was just the third time in 10 games this season that Binghamton has controlled fewer draw controls than the opposition. BU entered the week ranked seventh in the nation in draw controls per game.
Senior goalie Christa Quon (Vestal, N.Y.) made 12 saves in goal, while sophomore Chelsea Winslow (Auburn, N.Y.) finished out the game and had six saves.
After playing its last five games on the road, the Bearcats return home on Tuesday at 3 p.m. to take on non-conference foe St. Francis (Pa.). The contest will be the first game in a lacrosse doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at the East Gym Complex. The men's lacrosse team takes on Siena at 5 p.m.
