VESTAL, N.Y.--Playing on its home field for the first time in nearly three weeks, Binghamton (0-7) was defeated by visting St. Mary's (Calif.) 16-3 at the East Gym Complex in a non-conference game Tuesday afternoon. The Bearcats returned home after playing five of the first six games of the season on the road.
After sophomore attacker Laura Gabbamonte (Glen Cove, N.Y.) opened the scoring with an unassisted goal just 47 seconds into the contest, the Gaels scored 11 unanswered goals over the next 30 minutes to take an 11-1 lead into intermission.
Junior attacker Colette Spencer (Redmond, Wash./Forest Ridge) scored St. Mary's first goal 3:27 into the game. Just under four minutes later she fed senior midfielder Stephanie French (Sunnyvale, Calif./Cupertino) to give the Gaels a 2-1 lead. Spencer then added her second goal of the half at the 20:10 mark. Freshman attacker Molly Wagner (San Anselmo, Calif./Saint Ignatius) scored both of her goals in the first half, as did freshman midfielder Caitlin Hungate (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Thousand Oaks). The Gaels outshot their hosts 28-13, including 21-8 in the decisive first half.
The Bearcats scored a pair of late goals in the second half. Junior attacker Ashley Cincotta (Cortland, N.Y.) scored off a feed from sophomore midfielder Erin Wall (Bellerose Village, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) and freshman center Lauren Wetherell (Bethpage, N.Y.) found the net from in close on a pass from behind the net by junior attacker Clodagh Harte (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown). Binghamton scooped 40 ground balls and had nine draw controls in the game.
The game marked the first in a three-game homestand for the Bearcats, who return to conference play on Friday at 3 p.m. against the University of Vermont. Binghamton also takes on conference foe New Hampshire on Saturday at 3 p.m. Both games will be played at the East Gym Complex.
