NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Junior Sarah Downing scored five goals and dished out three assists to lead No.11 Vanderbilt past the Binghamton women's lacrosse team 22-7, on Saturday at the VU Lacrosse Complex.
Vanderbilt found the back of the net first just 2:27 into the game. But sophomore captain Beth Moore answered at the 26:47 mark to tie the game. However, the Commodores scored the next four goals, to take a 5-1 lead with 17:54 remaining in the first half. Sophomore Ali Castiglie broke the run off a feed from junior Erika Travis.
Vanderbilt would score three goals in the next three minutes to take a 8-2 lead with 12:27 to go in the first half. Freshman Lis Zuern and sophomore Lisa Illig would each score as the Commodores would finish the half on a 5-2 run to carry a 13-4 lead into the half. Spurred on by a 26-9 shot advantage in the first half, two Vanderbilt players recorded first-half hat trick.
Vanderbilt opened the second half by scoring five consecutive goals, before Moore answered with a goal at the 17:16 mark. Zuern and freshman Leah Smith would also score in the second half for the Bearcats.
Binghamton was lead by Zuern and Moore who each scored two. Castiglie, Illig and Moore would add one apiece, while Travis added Binghamton's lone assist.
Binghamton was out shot 39-13 in the game.
Binghamton is back in conference action when the Bearcats travel to UMBC this Wednesday, game time is 4 p.m.
