VESTAL, N.Y. -- Binghamton wrestling (11-6) dropped its third straight match - all to ranked opponents - falling 25-16 to No. 18 American Friday afternoon at Bender Arena. The match was deadlocked at 16-16 before the Eagles won the final two bouts for the winning margin. American had five nationally-ranked individuals and gained two pins and 21 team points in those five wins.
Sophomore 125-pound Derek Steeley provided the Bearcats' biggest win with a first-period pin over 20th-ranked Nick Arujau. Steeley trailed 4-0 early in the first period before scoring a reversal and then his third pin of the semester.
Seventh-ranked sophomore 149-pound Donnie Vinson saw his unbeaten dual streak end at 16 with an 8-3 loss to 12th-ranked Ganbayar Sanjaa. Vinson led 3-2 entering the third period but gave up an escape, takedown and back points. He is now 19-3 overall, 16-1 in duals.
Sophomore 184-pound Nate Schiedel, ranked 15th, snapped a two-match losing streak with a commanding 20-6 major decision. Schiedel improved to 28-6 overall, 12-4 in duals.
Binghamton travels to Fairfax to meet George Mason at 6 p.m. tonight.
