|Wrestling set to host season-opening Bearcat Open|
The wrestling team will open its season on Saturday when it hosts the non-scoring Bearcat Open in West Gym. Wrestlers from at least 16 different schools will compete, including Colonial Athletic Association opponents Hofstra, Drexel, Sacred Heart and Boston University.
The tournament will feature bouts from 10 weight classes on seven different mats. The competition will begin at 9 a.m. and run well into the evening.
The Bearcats, under sixth-year head coach Mike Fusilli, return five starters from a year ago. Highlighting the group is the trio of senior 157-pound Joe Privitere (Johnson City, N.Y.), sophomore 141-pound Josh Ruff (Bainbridge, N.Y./Bainbridge-Guilford) and junior 174-pound Jeff McAveney (New Fairfield, Conn.). Privitere, a former NCAA Division II All-American, went 15-7 last season, while Ruff was 18-5. Both have overcome injuries that limited their success last winter. McAveney went 24-15, and earned a team-best 47 dual match points.
At last year's Open, Ruff was runner-up at 133, and Privitere (149) and McAveney (184) each placed fifth
