Binghamton wrestling extends streak, rallies past Boston University 25-17
Bearcats win final four matches to erase 10-point deficit, record fourth consecutive victory

BOSTON -- Binghamton wrestling (9-9) used its strength in the upper weights to rally past host and fellow Colonial Athletic Association member Boston University 25-17 Saturday afternoon at Case Gym. Trailing 17-7, the Bearcats won the final four bouts to extended the program's record (Division I) win streak to four matches.

"It was a good win for us," head coach Pat Popolizio said. "I was very pleased to win six of the 10 matches."

Freshman 174-pound Josh Patterson sparked the comeback with a pin in just 1:32. Patterson raised his record to 24-7 overall, 15-3 in duals. Freshman 184-pound Corey Waite (Nichols, N.Y.) followed with a pin of his own in 6:23. From there, back-to-back decisions by freshman 197-pound Ed Backus (Mohawk, N.Y.) and junior heavyweight Mike Patterson provided the final margin.

"Those were two big pins by Josh and Corey," Popolizio said. "Corey was losing his match with 35 seconds left before he pinned the guy."

Earlier in the match, junior Kyle Fried and sophomore Nate Patterson continued their strong 1-2 punch at 149 and 157 pounds respectively. Fried earned a 9-6 decision and Patterson scored an 8-0 major decision. For Fried, the win boosted his overall record to 20-12. Patterson improved to 13-5 in duals.

The Bearcats host American University on February 15. Popolizio was the top assistant at American for two years before taking the Binghamton job in July.
